Argentina's presidential hopeful promises better relations with Britain over the Falklands

Argentina will take a less aggressive stance over the Falklands if centre-Right presidential hopeful Mauricio Macri is elected on Sunday, his foreign policy chief has told the Telegraph. And the 56-year-old current mayor of Buenos Aires plans to chart a more conciliatory course, and end the “demagogic” relationships of the past few years.
“We have to restore this relationship that has been frozen in recent years, as a result of this conflict,” said Fulvio Pompeo, Mr Macri’s most senior foreign policy adviser.“We will maintain forever our claim to the Falklands. But our relations with Britain should be broadened.” Mr Pompeo, who studied for a postgraduate degree in international relations at the University of Westminster, said that a Macri cabinet was unlikely to include a Falklands minister – a position created in 2013 by Mrs Fernandez. Daniel Filmus has headed up the ministry ever since, and been Mrs Fernandez’s chief tub-thumper. “We don’t need a Malvinas minister,” he said, using the Spanish word for the archipelago. “We have a minister for foreign relations.” The status of the Falklands has played practically no role in the Argentine electoral campaign, because politicians of all persuasions know that to question Buenos Aires’ claim to the territory would be electoral suicide. The position is, and will remain, that the islands should belong to Buenos Aires – despite the wishes of the inhabitants. But those living on the isles hope that whoever replaces Mrs Fernandez will be slightly less intent on pushing Argentine claims, and more concerned with the pressing issues of poverty reduction, rising insecurity and economic instability. Telegraph poll highlights differences between Britain and Argentina over Falkland Islands. Speaking on the sidelines of a rowdy campaign rally for Mr Macri in the city of Lanus, an industrial hub south of Buenos Aires, Mr Pompeo said that Britain and Argentina had much in common, and should collaborate on issues of shared interest. “The relationship with Great Britain is very important to us, and we will work to create different possible areas for constructive dialogue between our countries,” he said.
